Education Transformation #3: Caught Not Taught

Throughout this amazing interview (for me) with Mike Seyfang, he kept on bringing up the idea that School 2.0 and a transformation in education could not be taught to others. This goes against a lot of the things that I am trying to do with other teachers, but in the end, it makes a lot of sense.

Rather than teaching other teachers how to use the tools, we need to set up the environment so that they will want to learn these tools on their own. We need to make it so it is hideously unattractive to use anything but these tools. Not out of pressure of loosing a job, but rather I want teachers to learn new things because they feel the pressure of being left behind. I want them to learn new things because they want to learn new things.

Can we create environments where the only option is connection?

Can we provide opportunities for all educators to see collaboration and continual learning as a central tenet of their work?

I am asking you. Let me know what you think of this “Caught Not Taught” idea, either by comment or at benwilkoff@gmail.com.

Hey Ben, thanks for the kind words!!
    Two things:
    1. Could you link to my real website (http://mikeseyfang.com) not my old MSN blog
    2. Where is the link to the .mp3 ??? (remember to make it the FIRST enclosure link or most podcatchers will pull down the proprietary ‘enhanced’ m4a version)

    Looking forward to listening.
    Fang

Interesting listen guys. Mike I found your points about kids and the internet very on the mark. It is impossible the block all the bad parts and even harder to make sure the white lists are up to date and relevant for learning.
